      The ESAMI Evening Class Executive MBA Programme

      "The MBA that takes you to the edge of knowledge‚Global Thinking with an African Focus"

      THESIS (INTEGRATIVE RESEARCH PAPER)

      The Thesis is a written paper or report of empirical/theoretical research in connection with a practical/theoretical topic in any one area of the Executive MBA Programme. This is supposed to be an Independent study by the student about a topic of his/her own choice, resulting in a written report of about 45-55 typed pages. The final objective of the exercise is to test the ability of the candidate to select a problem of his/her choice, give it a framework and analyze it in a manner to end up with meaningful and implemental recommendations. This activity will be carried out in the SEVENTH and EIGHTH QUARTER.


      STRUCTURE OF THE PROGERAMME

      The programme is offered in a modular approach, in four main modules: foundation, integration, electives and Thesis or an integrative research paper.

      All the four modules can be completed in two years (24 months), attending classes in the evening on a part time basis. Classes will be conducted from 17.00 to 21.00 hours Monday to Friday, Saturday full day and Sunday half day for three (3) weeks in every three months. This gives the student 10 to 13 weeks to concentrate on her/his office work while completing project assignments.


      THE FOUNDATION STAGE

      The (8) foundation courses provide a thorough grounding in essential knowledge and skills in business management disciplines. The foundation courses aim at making the MBA student conversant with the fundamentals of all disciplines taking into considerations that some executives have professional degrees with limited managerial and business training. The 8 courses to be taught in two and a half (21/2) quarters are as follows:

      AF 501: Financial and Management Accounting (2 UNITS)

      IT 501: Business Information Communication Technologies for Managers (2 UNITS)

      HR 501: Human Resources Management (2 UNITS)

      OB 501: Organisational Behaviour (2 UNITS)

      MM 501: Marketing Management (2 UNITS)

      QM 501: Quantitative Methods (2 UNITS)

      GIM 501: Gender in Management (2 UNITS)


      INTEGRATION STAGE

      The aim of this segment of the MBA programme is to consolidate and build on the knowledge and skills acquired in the foundation courses. Contemporary regional and global issues will be taught in 12 subjects/courses to enable business executive make informed decisions in a given context.

      Integration courses will be taught from the second semester to first quarter of 4th semester as follows:

      AF 502: International Finance and Financial Markets (2 UNITS)

      CM 601: Commodity markets (2 UNITS)

      ED 601: Entrepreneurship (2 UNITS)

      PM 601: Operations management (2 UNITS)

      CG 601: Corporate Governance (2 UNITS)


      ELECTIVES STAGE

      This segment of the degree programme enables the student to do a course of her/his own choice. It is a filler segment. Students may choose among the following courses: Transportation management, The consulting process, Competing in the Global Arena, Corporate Finance and Advanced entrepreneurship. The running of a specific course for the elective is dependent on the number of students being not less than 5 per center.

      The elective courses are offered in the fourth semester.

      THE COURSE

      RM 610 Integrative Research Paper (Thesis) (5 Units)

      Training Methods & Credit Hours/Units

      The faculty members of ESAMI and selected resources persons will all have had extensive teaching/training experience at University level, as well as relevant business and managerial experience in their own specialization.

      The course content and areas of specialization are those that reflect current and expected demands of our clients in the region, given the present socio-political and economic conditions.

      All the credit courses (totaling 52 credit units or 780 credit hours) offered by the programme include relevant practical cases and case studies, that recognize both globalization and regional significance. The goal is to internalize critical analysis capabilities in an appropriate manner, for relevant decision-making management of change.

      As with other internationally recognised Executive MBA awarding programmes, a full course of two units, carries 18 hours of Lectures and Discussions Contact Hours, 8 hours of Case Analysis and 4 hours of Guided Study: a total of 30 hours.


      Programme Venues

      The Executive MBA programme is currently offered at ESAMI headquarters in Arusha (Tanzania) as well as at its satellite campuses presently located at Kampala (Uganda), Lusaka (Zambia), Harare (Zimbabwe), Lilongwe (Malawi) Nairobi (Kenya) and Mbabane (Swaziland). More satellite campuses may be opened up at the other ESAMI field offices to bring the programme closer to the majority of its clients, in accordance with their expressed needs.


      Examination Regulations

      Continuous assessment and end-of-semester examinations will contribute to the final score as follows:

      Continuous assessment (including quarterly project work), 40%

      End of semester examination (written), 60%


      Assessment Scheme

      The examination marks of each course shall be graded as follows:

      80% - 100% - Distinction (A)

      65 - 79% - Credit (B)

      50 - 64% - Pass (C)

      40 - 49% - Fail (D)

      39% and below - Bad Fail (E)

      Unsatisfactory Performance

      All courses in a Semester must be passed before proceeding to the next semester.

      Candidates who have failed in not more than three courses will be allowed to sit once supplementary examinations at an appropriate time as determined by the Academic Board.

      Candidates who fail in more than three courses or who fail supplementary examinations will be allowed to repeat once the whole semester.

      A candidate failing in three courses with a mark of 40-49 or any paper with a mark below 40% and obtains an average below 50%, shall be discontinued, and not be given the option to supplement or repeat.

       

      The Academics Board

      The Academic Board of the Institute shall deal with policy matters concerning admissions, curriculum approval, and enforcing academic proficiency in general, including the following:

      Curriculum development

      Moderation of exams

      Compiling and approving examination marks

      Handling disciplinary cases

      MBA Faculty Board

      There shall be an Executive MBA Faculty Board (comprising of all the staff involved in student evaluation for the semester) whose functions are as follows:

      Setting of examinations

      Dealing with training and examination incidences (complaints)

      Marking and grading examination papers

      Submitting reports to the Academic Board for final approval

      Exemptions

      Transfers to and from other Universities are currently being considered for implementation.

      Independent Projects

      Each student working under the guidance of a faculty supervisor shall complete an in-depth study and analysis of a topic related to the major areas of study. The researched project shall be relevant to business both currently and in the future demands of management practice. The project shall be considered equivalent to two core courses (i.e. 4 units).

      The project must be passed at a minimum score of 50%. A project score of 45-49 is supplementable. If the project supplementary is failed again, the candidate shall be discontinued.


      Award Of Degree

      The Executive MBA degree shall be awarded to candidates upon successful completion of 52 credit units of study including the project/research paper.

      Fees

      The total fees for the two year Executive MBA degree programme is US$7,000; Annual fees are US$3,500, and Semester fees are US$1,750 and US$875 per quarter
